Thursday night's foul weather was no deterrent for the thousands of fans who – drinks in hand – crowded Celebrate Brooklyn to listen to Serbian-born Goran Bregovic's 20-piece Wedding and Funeral Band, who kicked off the proceedings by gradually entering the stage section by section, as if announcing what the show was going to be about.

Bregovic did not disappoint, opening with a raucous, nearly 10 minute-long tune taken from his recently released Alkohol (Wrasse). The audience responded accordingly, happily losing themselves to the sounds that emanated from the loudspeakers.

The band slowed things down for the following number, which was more inspired by classical Mozart – the string section began with a beautiful, highly melodic interlude that evolved into a more funereal sound as the other members joined in. They followed with yet another downtempo vocally-centered tune.

Shortly after that, Bregovic called for a livelier tempo, and then it was back to the more party-friendly, Middle Eastern inspired beats that brought all – this writer included – to their feet. By the end of the set, the entire crowd was dancing, visibly taken by the music they were listening to. “That's how we do it,” a friend told me. “It's the Serbian way.”
