Ricochet Dreamer, CD Review >>

Flamenco & Hip-Hop- two genres I love, because both of them are, in certain ways, are musics of outcasts, made by people living in the margins of society. Both are forms of music that have been used to record a history, often of social oppression, and also as a form of protest.

Canyon Cody is an ethnomusicologist who won a Fulbright to conduct research in Spain (my DREAM), and as part of his research project he created the album Gnawledge, which mixes hip hop with flamenco. I love it.

Flamenco itself is a fusion of styles- of gypsies, moors, and jews- all groups who lived in the margins of Spanish society. To then blend flamenco with hip hop- I just think it's brilliant, and I love this album. You can download the whole thing here for free.

In fact, my favorite part of the website is this picture:

My favorite part of the picture is the crossed out dollar sign- which I find completely in tune with the gypsy philosophy, which Don Pohren describes as a sort of social-libertarian (which others might describe as libertarian socialism, anarcho-syndicalism, social ecology, or leftist-libertarianism-- anti-capitalist anyway you look at it). 08/13/09 >> go there
