January 29, 2009 - Berlin, Germany's 17 Hippies consists of "only" 13 musicians, with varied upbringings and musical backgrounds — but, jokes Mountain Stage host Larry Groce, "Who's counting?" The group's instruments range from standard guitar and bass to dual accordions, dual violins, dual clarinets, trumpet, trombone, banjo, bouzouki and cello. The result is a melting pot of global influences combined into a high-energy, unwavering rhythmic onslaught.
Here, the band performs five songs from a Mountain Stage appearance recorded in Morgantown, W.Va., in March 2008. El Dorado, 17 Hippies' new album, comes out in Europe on Jan. 30.
