I know I’ve been a little mainstream with the coverage on the blog this week, but this show is just way too interesting not to write about.  If you don’t know about Tinariwen, definitely acquaint yourself as quickly as possible.  No matter what your particular tastes are, this is an astonishing band playing nothing but the super solidest of tunes.  Plus, they’re all Tuareg musicians and are one of the few legitimate “world music” acts to break through in a major way (problematize away friends…).  Fool’s Gold, on the other hand, is from Los Angeles and contains members from oft-overlooked Foreign Born (another favorite on this blog).  Fool’s Gold borrow heavily from the sounds of the African diaspora, but aren’t directly related to it.  Tinariwen couldn’t be further on the other end of the spectrum.  This pairing is fraught with things to problematize, and that’s exactly what makes this show so cool.  It’s expensive, $30, but if you have the money it’s two wonderful acts and something academic to mull over, all for the price of one!  Two tracks below.

MP3: “Tamatant-Tilay” – Tinariwen

MP3: “Surprise Hotel” – Fool’s Gold
