Anyone who tells you that all music is beginning to sound alike has never been to globalFest. In its seventh year, the New York City festival is the perfect place to hear new, fresh and not-your-everyday overdone pop from all over the world. This year the program includes a wide variety of on-the-verge artists performing diverse rhythms and fusions from Transylvanian blues to Siberian shaman rock from Central Asia.
This year's globalFest will also feature three dynamite Latin music acts in a month that is traditionally as musically dry as the Gobi desert.
Argentina's Federico Aubele will be there, serenading the evening's guests with music that has its roots in tango, cumbia and boleros and then electrifies these traditional forms with his acoustic guitar styling. If his latest album, Amatorio, is anything to go by, his set should include lots of romantic music for the ladies (or romantically minded gentlemen).
Then, get ready to shake those hips! Two bands from New York are also on the slate and both of these are guaranteed to bring you to your dancing feet.
La Cumbiamba eNeYe revives the music of Colombia and Central America by capturing the spirit of Colombia's outdoor parties, known as 'cumbiambas' and adding the urban twist that has always defined New York City.
Finally, here's a chance to hear New York's hottest salsa dura band, La Excelencia. Just back from a screamingly successful world tour, I just put their last album, Mi Tumbao Social, on the list of 2009's top salsa albums. Anyone who thinks salsa is getting stale really should go out and hear just how hot and fresh it can sound.
Three great Latin music acts, but I wouldn't want to miss the other global music acts, since it makes me think I may be living on the wrong coast!
