Chicago Remezcla, Concert Preview >>
Chicana band Sones de México has both the Latin Grammy’s seal of approval (their latest release was nominated for Best Folk Album), but also, in a way, Led Zeppelin’s (the Sones were asked by local Chicago bands to participate in a Zep cover album). They’re releasing the follow-up album, Kids, this weekend at Evanston’s Space.
The Chicago-based band formed nearly 15 years ago, aiming to keep the tradition of Mexican son alive. The ensemble has developed and popularized original arrangements based on gustos, chilenas and son jarocho, and they’ve even experimented cross-culturally with symphonic, Irish, jazz and rock music (yup, Led Zeppelin-worthy, indeed), though never abandoning their son roots.
