Whitewater is an easy day trip from Milwaukee. A city of about 13,500 people and home to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, it offers activities on the city's two lakes - Cravath and Tripp - and a variety of cultural events.

What to do: Attend Sones de Mexico on May 4, an evening of Mexican music and dance, part of an initiative by the National Endowment for the Arts. The venue is Young Auditorium on the UW-Whitewater campus at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 to $25. More at uww.edu/youngauditorium, or (262) 472-2222.
