Time Out New York, Artist Review/Concert Preview >>
The Grammy nominated Latin folk group, Sones de Mexico, recently released its first kids’ album, Fiesta Mexicana: Mexican Songs & Stories for Niños & Niñas and their Papás & Mamás, a bilingual, two-disc set aimed at both English and Spanish-speakers. The band hopes to connect with second generation Mexican-Americans and other bicultural children through engaging folk narratives and songs. Familiar favorites (”La Bamba”) are mixed with traditional tunes such as “El Torito Coiteco,” which comes from the Zoque people of Chiapas. Dan Zanes fans will go wild for “Tixtla,” the Afro-Mexican ditty to which he lends his voice. This Friday evening, the band plays a concert at Carnegie Hall. Unfortunately it begins at 10pm, but you can always buy the album and play it before bedtime.
