Chicago Celebrates the Mexican Revolution with Sones De Mexico Ensemble
Nov 11, 2010 17:25 - By: Rosalind Cummings-Yeates

November 20 marks the centennial of the Mexican Revolution and Chicago is celebrating with style.  Besides exhibits commemorating the event at the Newberry Library and a concert of traditional Mexican music at the Old Town School of Music,  sponsored by the Consulate General of Mexico, Chicago based Sones Mexico Ensemble kicks off a night of spirited musical performances at the House of Blues on November 20.

Honoring the day that revolutionaries officially started the fight for Mexican freedom from Porfirio Diaz’ dictatorship, the Grammy-nominated group has organized a cultural extravaganza of music. Featured performers include Alejandro Flores from legendary Mexican rock band Cafe Tacuba, Mariachi Real Guadalajara, the Irish Music School of Chicago, blues harp master Billy Branch and the Chicago Afro Latin Jazz  Ensemble horn section.  The six-member Sones De Mexico Ensemble will act as hosts  as well as house band, supplying their traditional Mexican folk rhythms as well as Aztec, Mayan and Zoque indigenous sounds.  The show will feature cross cultural music, dance and an all out exploration of the  rich Mexican cultural and historical heritage. Put on your dancing  zapatas because this concert is not to be missed.
