Puerto Rico'sPleñaLibre took Pleña and bomba, two rhythms hardly known outside of the barrios of San Juan and New York City, and made them a viable force on the international Latin music scene. The band's musical director, Gary Nuñez, has a broad knowledge of traditional Puerto Rican music and the band plays in a variety of styles. They can rock the house with traditional singing and drumming, then turn around and lay down a smoking, jazz-heavy, Afro-Rican jam. PleñaLibre has earned multiple Grammy nominations and continues to call attention to the rich folkloric traditions of Puerto Rico. PleñaLibreplays Wednesday, July 14 at OaklandYoshi's (510 Embarcadero). Shows at 8 p.m. ($20.00) and 10 p.m. ($12). Yoshis.com
