Folk art
Meet O.L. Samuels, a well-known Tallahassee folk artist, at the day-long Matinee of the Arts at the Tallahassee Museum, 3945 Museum Drive, on Lake Bradford. Samuels creates all manner of surrealistic wood sculptures, often painted in brilliant shades of red, green, blue and purple. Some are downright scary, too. Samuels is fond of saying that he carves what "the spirit" tells him to carve -— and if the mood strikes, he might share a story or two from his hardscrabble life. There will be plenty of other things to do and see at the museum's art festival, including dancing and musical performances and animal encounters. It's free, and part of Tallahassee's Seven Days of Opening Nights celebration of the arts. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; Samuels will be on the back porch of the Fleischmann Natural Science Building from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
