Nigerian Juju master King Sunny Adé was among the first of many so-called “world music” ambassadors to be promoted in the U.S., when Island Records had the bright idea to bill him as the African Bob Marley. That ploy never really worked in full, but that doesn’t change the fact that Ade plays some of the most entrancing, joyous, and worthwhile guitar music around. He has released dozens of records over the decades, all offering intricate and overlapping leads that sound miraculously weightless and full of gravity at the same time.
