“Leva-Me Aos Fados” (World Village): A-
Fado is often inadequately described as the blues of Portugal, but Moura’s sultry and smoldering style makes a strong case for comparing it to Spain’s flamenco, in which the passion of the singer trumps everything else. That Moura makes this connection by means of a contralto that’s thin by any conventional measure and a traditionally skeletal band makes the gut-churning emotional punch of “Lev-Me Aos Fados” all the more remarkable.
