Stars, Avett Brothers, Swell Season to Play Calgary Folk Festival

by: Darrick Thomas

[via Spinner] While it may not be as anticipated as Coachella, Bonnaroo, or SXSW, the Calgary Folk Festival is pulling some pretty big names for its 2010 lineup. Although folk purists will have their issues with many of the bands and artists that are on board, festival promoters are excited to broaden the genre pool.

The headliners for the folk fest include Stars, the Avett Brothers, Roberta Flack, Michael Franti & Spearhead, St. Vincent, and the Swell Season. Don’t worry folksters, there’s also Greg Brown, Hill Country Revue, Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens, and Peatbog Faeries among others.

The 31st annual Calgary Folk Festival will be held July 22-25 at Prince’s Island Park. For ticket info and for the full lineup of artists, head over to the festival’s website. And for a taste of what the Avett Brothers are like live, check out our review of their recent show in Santa Barbara, CA.
