The best festival moments are the spontaneous ones. Whether it be Radiohead demanding the lights be turned on at Glastonbury, Noel Gallagher being pushed from the stage at Virgin Festival Toronto or Bruce Springsteen showing up on a small stage to jam with disciples the Gaslight Anthem, it's the air of spontaneity that makes baking in the unrelenting sun worth every sweat dripping second.

So when Michael Franti, pictured, announced his last minute inclusion in the fest's inaugural Friday workshops at the Calgary Folk Festival -- essentially a songwriting showcase and jam session between artists -- alongside Vancouver's Po' Girl, Andalusia's El Puchero Del Hortelano and DJ Dolores, it was obvious that those who made it to the 3PM Fast Forward workshop were in for one of those special moments.

And Franti didn't disappoint. Sharing the tiny Field Law stage with over 10 other musicians, the conscious rocker spread his positive message backed by a smorgasbord of cultural influences, highlighted by a multitude of solos – including horns, accordion, bongo and sax -- during a spirited version of single 'Sound of Sunshine.'

Elsewhere, indie rockers Stars collaborated with Library Voices and Honeybear as part of the ironically titled A Simple Clan workshop, and the Swell Season participated in a hootenanny with fellow mainstager Joe Henry and Robin Holcomb.

The most eclectic grouping of the day went to the Saturday headliners the Cat Empire, who collaborated with Israeli funk/rappers Coolooloosh and Niger based Etran Finatawa to produce an eclectic and electrifying set of danceable culture-clash.

The workshops continue through Saturday and Sunday. Keep an eye out for videos of the highlights throughout the weekend on Spinner.
