CANTON — A Toronto-based band will get audiences moving when it visits St. Lawrence University on Saturday.

The catalyst of that movement won't only be the band's Afrobeat, jazz and pop. Band members also hope to move fans to get involved in environmental activism and "social justice."

Mr. Something Something also is taking audience participation to new levels with its SoundCycle - a bicycle-powered sound system.

The dance rhythms of Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Ghana make up the basis for the sound of Mr. Something Something.

The band's name is a play off of the Fela Kuti song "Mr. Follow Follow," according to spokesman Mat Martin. Mr. Kuti, from Nigeria, was a pioneer of Afrobeat music and a human rights activist. He died in 1997 at the age of 58.

Over the last five years, Mr. Something Something has played more than 500 shows in Canada, including appearances at many folk festivals and most major jazz festivals. The band, specializing in "dancefloor activism," also is becoming increasingly well-known for its green politics and environmental activism.

This year's tour features the "SoundCycle."

"It's 10 bikes that are hooked up to a single generator, and audience members pedal the bikes which powers the show," Mr. Martin said.

"Spontaneous parties lie at the heart of the band's music and message," Mr. Martin said in a release.

Its latest album is "Shine Your Face."

The roots of Mr. Something Something were planted when Ottawa residents and childhood friends John MacLean on tenor saxophone and percussionist Larry Graves formed a Dixieland band to play at weddings, senior citizen centers and at parties. They both regularly visited Nigeria and Ghana.

The pair later moved to Toronto, where they met Swedish frontman Johan Hultqvist. The band also includes Paul MacDougal on guitar and Liam Smith on bass. An "extended family" of musicians often travels with the band for its shows. The band is known for its improvisation skills.
