Tiki Time, Huntington Beach Style Ready to start off 2011 early with a festive, aloha-esque jump in your step? Then you might want to head down to Huntington Beach this evening to Don The Beachcomber. Tonight Don's will be in full-on Tiki mode as the Waitiki Festival kicks into gear. The three-day festival began Wednesday but tonight is when things really get going, as a healthy influx of Bay Area-based Tiki aficionados made the drive down today to take in all things Tiki at the restaurant that morphs into a bar tonight.
Around 9 p.m., festival house band (in their west cost debut) the Waitiki 7 will be joined by jazz clarinetist Robert Drasnin and vocalist Sherry Shaoling. Expect to hear their take on classics by the likes of Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Cal Tjader, and Les Baxter.
But the fun goes all night as Combustible Edison's "Brother Cleve" and The Millionaire DJ in an adjacent area, where they plan to spin everything from go-go to exotica in their first joint DJ appearance in fifteen years. Or simply drop by the restaurant's Dagger Bar tiki lounge (they feature a special Happy Hour menu tonight from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.) for a festive cocktail. 12/30/10 >> go there
