4. ELIKEH AND TOLUMIDE
[CONCERT] DC9 is holding a Save Africa Concert, highlighting the crisis in Darfur, Sudan, with performances by local African talent. First on the bill is Elikeh, a fascinating collective of like-minded roots instrument players. The leader of the pack is singer-songwriter Serge "Massama" Dogo, whose Togolese heritage informs the group's sound. Tolumide is the soulful singer whose pipes earned her the 2006 Nigeria Entertainment Award for best female R&B artist. Since arriving in the States, her music has taken on a new shape reflecting both her heritage and her future.
Thursday at 9 p.m. DC9, 1940 Ninth St. NW. 202-483-5000. $10. 08/24/08 >> go there
