PRI's The World, CD Review >>
We stay in Togo for today’s Global Hit. Togo is where musican Massama Dogo was born.
Dogo realized two things when he was in his teens. One was that he wanted to play music for a living. And number two…he DIDN’T want to merely cover hits by the Rolling Stones and other established bands.
Dogo wanted to write his OWN songs…like this one. Massama Dogo WAS writing his own songs. But not that many people were listening.
One reason could have been the political nature of some of Dogo’s lyrics. They often targeted corruption within the Togolese government.
That took some guts, considering that Dogo’s father WORKED for the government. Ten years ago, Massama Dogo came to Washington, DC to live and play his music.
He formed a band of members of the African music scene in the city.
The band is named Elikeh.
And their forthcoming album is called “Adje! Adje!.”
