Concert Picks for the Week of August 6-12

by Marianne Meyer - Citysearch Contributor

The next time anyone from a so-called “music-city” like New York, Los Angeles or Nashville gives you attitude about the D.C. scene, tell them about this amazing week in the DMV (District/Maryland/Virginia). There is at least one great show happening every night in the next seven and some nights even offer a choice between two--or more!--fine events. I’m exhausted, and exhilarated, just thinking about it. For more music news and opinions, visit me at www.closepersonalfriend(dot)com.

SOMETHING CORPORATE on Tuesday and Wednesday (August 10 and 11) THE SAW DOCTORS on Thursday night (August 12)-- Of course, Something Corporate’s two-night stand is sold out. After a multi-year hiatus, the most melodic of the alternative/emo pack (and such labels do the band little justice) has reunited for a summer tour that doesn’t smack of need or ego, but seems to come from a genuine place of rediscovery. And the chance to hear live versions of such great songs as “I Woke Up in a Car,” “Punk Rock Princess” or the achingly beautiful “Konstantine” again make it worth the extra effort of finding those elusive tickets. Come back on Thursday night for a Celtic rock party with The Saw Doctors (pictured). Tuam County Galway’s favorite sons create guitar-driven, punk- and rockabilly-tinged pub songs, exploring both humor and heartbreak and perform them with a passion and communal joy that often finds the audience drowning out the band. A fittingly celebratory end to a great week of live music.
