Get schooled on world music at Skirball

Posted by QueenCrab on June 18th, 2010

We can all be a little myopic in our music tastes and exposure to different cultures. Admittedly, I don’t “get” classical, country and most post-90s hip-hop. I know even less about native styles from various nations around the world. Sure, I love me some Flogging Molly (Irish Celtic punk!), Gogol Bordello (gypsy funk/punk!) and Ozomatli (Latin-flavored rock/rap/dance), but I could afford to expand my horizons further.

Well, those of us in Los Angeles don’t even need to afford it. The Skirball Cultural Center is presenting its annual Sunset Concerts Series for a minimal fee to the curious public. The events occur every Thursday starting July 22 and concluding August 26. The admission price? FREE. All you have to pay for is parking: $5 per car containing 3 or more passengers; $10 otherwise.

Here’s the breakdown of the acts:

07/22 Parno Graszt (Hungarian gypsies – pictured above) http://tinyurl.com/ParnoGraszt
07/29 Natacha Atlas (Arabic-flavored electronica vocalist) http://tinyurl.com/NatachaAtlas
08/05 Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys (Cajun n’ Creole) http://tinyurl.com/SRiley
08/12 La Excelencia (revolutionary salsa ambassadors) http://tinyurl.com/LaExcelencia
08/19 Jews on Vinyl Revue (revered veterans alongside the up n’ coming) http://tinyurl.com/Jvinyl
08/26 Kenge Kenge (Kenyan roots music) http://tinyurl.com/KengeKenge

The Skirball Cultural Center is located at 2701 North Sepulveda Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA. Ph: 310.440.4500.
