Monsieur Delire, CD Review >>

Kneel down, everyone, for Charming Hostess is back! And this new project is NOT a cappella. Actually, it rocks! Jewlia Eisenberg, Marika Hughes and Cynthia Taylor are surrounded by a clarinetist (Jason Ditzian), a drummer (Ches Smith) and a bassist/guitarist in Shahzad Ismaily! Not to mention a jolly list of guests that includes Marc Ribot and Nils Frykdahl (of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and an ex-Hostess) who comes in to sing a song. The writing and sound design of this record are heavy aplenty (Ismaily’s influence, I bet), which befits the topic: texts found on Babylonian incantation bowls and amulets. Less complex than the music on Eat or Punch (no demented time signatures or East-European polyphonies), but occasionally heavier than either. Different and quite strong. [Below: A performance of the song “Seven Spirits” with a scaled-down line-up.] 08/10/10 >> go there
