Ashkenaz mixes it up: something for everyone
Tuesday, 10 August 2010

TORONTO – If Canada’s a melting pot of diverse nations, the Ashkenaz Festival serves as the cholent of this analogy, offering a taste of traditional Jewish culture by testing mixtures of different ingredients and hoping for the perfect medley.

This year’s celebration of Yiddish society – the eighth biannual fete since its founding in July 1995 – features more than 90 acts and 200-plus performers from more than a dozen countries. The events will include theatrical shows, multilingual poetry, as well as bands inspired by the indie rock and ’80s power pop genres.

The intermingling, however, is not only taking place on stage.

“Nearly half of the 60,000 attendees are not Jewish,” noted Eric Stein, Ashkenaz’s artistic director. “[The festival is] an opportunity to share Jewish culture and values with the broader community and it’s incredibly gratifying to see so large and multicultural an audience enthusiastically embrace Jewish cultural forms.”

Most of the performances for the week-long festival are free, though there are some ticketed events. Ashkenaz runs from Aug. 31 through Sept. 6 at the Harbourfront Centre and other locations.
