From Saturday's Globe and Mail Published on Friday, Sep. 03, 2010 6:37PM EDT Last updated on Friday, Sep. 03, 2010 7:11PM EDT

It’s a bird, it’s a plane…

It’s a United States Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon, a lightweight multi-role fighter jet powered by 30,000 pounds of thrust and which can sustain 9-g turns. It heralds, once again, the end of the CNE and summer in the best way possible: with a celebration of the coolest planes ever to fly over the earth. Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. www.theex.com

Schna-na-na

Remember Julian Schnabel, the enfant terrible of Neo-expressionism in the 1980s who famously said, “I’m the closest thing to Picasso that you'll see in this *#@ life” and who then, even more famously, tried his hand at directing and has won a Golden Globe, a Golden Palm, two nominations for the Golden Lion and one for an Academy Award? Now he’s got his own retrospective at the AGO. To January 2; $19.50; 317 Dundas St. West. www.ago.net

Jerusalem vibrations

Introducing the Balkan Beat Box, a cross-cultural band mixing dance music, funk, hip hop, reggae as well as Middle Eastern and Sephardic rhythms. It is just one of the performers headlining the 15th annual Ashkenaz Festival. Other acts include The Other Europeans (folk and Klezmer) and Yiddish Princess (traditional Yiddish song married to ’80s power pop and hard rock). Saturday, Sunday and Monday; most events free; Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay West. www.ashkenazfestival.com

Spanish for “party”

The world has nearly 30 Spanish-speaking countries and 20 of them are sending representatives to Mel Lastman Square for Hispanic Fiesta, a celebration of food, flamenco, tango, mariachi and everything else that makes Hispanic culture wonderful. Musical guests include the Imbayakunas, Gabriel Romero and Lucho de Sedas. Saturday, Sunday and Monday, beginning at 3 p.m. Free. Mel Lastman Square, 5100 Yonge St. www.hispanicfiesta.com

What’s in a name?

The Missouri indie-pop band called Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, whose first album was called Broom and whose latest is called Let It Sway, is playing the El Mocambo. Saturday, 9 p.m. $12. El Mocambo, 462 Spadina Ave.
