Broken Social Scene Take Tour Detour for Polaris Prize Performance
Posted on Sep 19th 2010 10:00AM by Jenny Charlesworth
The $20,000 up for grabs as part of the Polaris Music Prize is a decent chunk of change, but you'll have to pardon Broken Social Scene mainstay Brendan Canning if he's not overly-worked up about the cash purse. "It would be nerve-wracking if we were up for half a million dollars, and it was all going to my private fund," the co-founder of Canada's sprawling indie-rock collective tells Spinner.
Cash, and jokes, aside, Canning is honoured to find his band in the nominated lot. "It's nice to be included," he says. "It's a good thing, and we're happy to be a part of it.
Currently on the road in support of the Short Listed 'Forgiveness Rock Record,' the Toronto indie rockers are taking time out from their busy tour schedule in order to perform at the gala on Monday (Sept. 20). Canning, understandably, sounds a little less than thrilled when discussing the mad dash required to make it back to Canada for the star-studded event.
"It's kind of right in the middle of our tour so we'll be driving all the way back from Connecticut where we play the night before," he says. "Then we have to turn around and go back [to the US] the next day."
It's only the hectic drive that seems to have the singer and multi-instrumentalist down, as he perks up when talk turns to Broken Social Scene's gala performance. "We're probably going to play 'Meet Me in the Basement' and 'Texico Bitches,'" he says. "It should be fun." 09/19/10 >> go there
