Finer details of the fest

Katherine Laidlaw, National Post · Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010

So, there's this little film festival coming to town, perhaps you've heard? The noise of film premieres and celebrity sightings can be deafening, especially if you simply just want to see a movie, and so we present the finer details on how to TIFF:

Where to buy Single tickets to films at TIFF are on sale online at tiff. net, over the phone at 1-877-968-FILM (3456) and at the Festival Box Office, located at 363 King St. W. The box office and phone lines are open today to Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sept. 9 to Sept. 18 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sept. 19 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where to watch The fest's opening night gala, Score: A Hockey Musical, screens Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. at Roy Thomson Hall, at 60 Simcoe St. There are 10 theatres showing films this year, across the downtown core. They are:

- AMC Yonge-Dundas, 10 Dundas St. E.;

- Cineplex Odeon Varsity Cinema, 55 Bloor St. W.;

- Isabel Bader Theatre, 93 Charles St. W.;

- Jackman Hall at the Art Gallery of Ontario, 317 Dundas St. W.;

- National Film Board, 150 John St.;

- Ryerson Theatre, 43 Gerrard St. E.;

- Scotiabank Theatre, 259 Richmond St. W.;

- TIFF Bell Lightbox, 350 King St. W.;

- VISA Screening Room and Winter Garden Theatre, 189 Yonge St. Most gala premium screenings are held at Roy Thomson Hall, although some are also held at the Isabel Bader Theatre and the VISA Screening Room and Winter Garden Theatre.

When to go If your tickets are being held at the box office, it's recommended that you pick them up at least an hour before the start of the film. Admission is only guaranteed until 15 minutes before the movie starts, and there's no admission 10 minutes after the film begins. Latecomers are admitted at the staff's discretion, so it helps to be on time. (Note: Even if a screening is sold out, more tickets sometimes go on sale at 7 a.m. the day of the screening, so it's worth checking back. And if not all ticket-holders show up, the festival makes their tickets available to people in the rush line at the venue's box office about 10 minutes before the show.)

How to vote To vote for the Cadillac People's Choice Award, fill out the ballots handed out at the end of each film. A free screening of the winner will be held the night of Sept. 19 at the Ryerson Theatre. Tickets will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis to those in the designated screening lineup, beginning two hours before the show.

Where to party (for free) The festival is hosting a block party on Sept. 12 to celebrate the ribbon-cutting and opening of the TIFF Bell Lightbox headquarters. King Street West from John Street to Peter Street will be closed from 11 a.m. onward, for family-friendly activities with a Wizard of Oz theme, such as a bouncing castle and face-painting. The block party will include performances by Polaris Prize nominees including Karkwa, The Sadies and Radio Radio. Fefe Dobson and 100 Monkeys will also perform, as will a special guest headliner to be announced on Sept. 11.
