Road Report: Broken Social Scene Takes a Break With 'Yo Gabba Gabba'

Broken Social Scene has embarked on their North American tour in support of 'Forgiveness Rocks Record,' their long-awaited fourth studio album, which features guest vocals from Feist, Emily Haines, Spiral Stairs and Sebastien Grainger. The Canadian rock outfit is joined by the Wooden Birds and the Sea and Cake, and will be checking in with updates from the road all along the way.
In their second entry, Brendan Canning talks about his bandmates' visit to the 'Yo Gabba Gabba' set, playing unforgettable shows in Boston and New York and heading back to Toronto for the Polaris Music Prize awards. On the bus outside Higher Ground, the club we're playing in Burlington, Vermont tonight -- the state that has no billboards. Amazing. Some of the boys spent the day on the set of 'Yo Gabba Gabba' with Mates of State for a one-of-a-kind dance party. As I didn't go, it's been likened to me as the Muppet Show of the new generation. That, I can relate to.
In the adult world, 'Let's Get Lost,' the Chet Baker film, is on the television. Sad and beautiful. Justin naps in the back. It's taco night at Higher Ground and there's also a very excellent bluegrass band playing in the other room. But let me go back...
One week ago we were in Boston AND with a night off before our show at House of Blues, I got to throw down a little DJ set at a place called Enormous Room. You know, keep the troops entertained on the night off. Funny, the house DJ was the same guy who sold me my vintage tee that day for fifteen bones. Small world. Fun night. 7.9.
Boston treated us very well, maybe the best they have yet. It was one of those gigs you dream of playing when you're a teenager seeing Slayer up on stage at the Masonic Temple. Two thousand people ready to give in to the moment, and to close the night off singing "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" in unison. I shook a lot of hands and kissed a lot of cheeks in Boston. Everyone smelled nice so that inspired me to throw down another DJ set on the bus this time.
And then there's Central Park....
A landmark gig for BSS. Packed house in NYC. Our touring comrades The Sea and Cake were stellar that night and it was hard not to have a good time on such a beautiful September evening. Also a dream gig, but to be honest, I had just as much fun in New Haven, Connecticut the next night and joined TSAC for a couple tunes. In fact, Kevin, David, Sam and Andrew have all done some jumping up on stage for a few tunes. The cross-pollination between the two bands is exactly why we wanted to do this tour in the first place.
Made it back home to Toronto for the Polaris Prize awards on Monday night at the Masonic Temple, where those same Slayer gigs took place. Congratulations to Kar-kwa for taking the twenty G's back to Quebec. It was a great night of music with wonderful camaraderie between the bands and the biz.
All went off without a hitch aside from the fact that a rollerblader plowed into Kevin's mom, Maggie, outside the club while in front of the evening's rent-a-cops, who didn't seem to mind. Nice.
The Drews don't take to kindly to that sort of indifference from Metro's finest, so what ensued was some toe-to-toe, Brighton-meets-Essex rebuttal, and let's just say there was pitching for a family jail cell by the end of it. Despite the confrontation, we all made our bus call of 2 a.m. David Drew's email the following morning expressed his regrets that there were no arrests. He felt it would have been great publicity for the band and also the Polaris Prize Awards show.
Gotta stay punk rock kids, and you always have to stick up for your mom.
