East Village Community School releases album to raise funds
Posted in Celebrity, Music, Schools by Blair Tidwell on September 17th, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Most schools throw fall fest fundraisers at this time of year. But, as befits its artsy nabe, the East Village Community School is doing something a little different. Parents of students enrolled in the institution, including celebrated Irish singer Susan McKeown, recorded a delightful 19-track disc titled Songs from the East Village. The album reflects the area’s multicultural residents with an eclectic lineup, from Tibetan tunes to American classics. The project also boasts some star-power: In addition to McKeown, actress Sarita Choudhury of Mississippi Masala fame spins a tale on “The Tiger” with acclaimed bassist Melvin Gibbs backing her up. Grab the CD at its official release party at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum next Monday, September 21, or order your copy of the disc here. Songs from the East Village release party, Mon Sept 21 at 6:30pm. Lower East Side Tenement Museum, 108 Orchard St at Broome St (212-982-8420, tenement.org). Subway: F to Delancey St; J, Z, M to Delancey–Essex St. RSVP to events@tenement.org
