Violin virtuoso Eileen Ivers’ commitment to traditional Irish music stems more out of strong and curious love for the instrument rather than a sense of obligation as the daughter of Irish immigrants.

“I had always heard – of course – the Irish music,” said Ivers of her childhood growing up in the Bronx. “My folks would play recordings, so I was certainly exposed to it, my sister as well. But I definitely remember pushing my mother to get me a violin. There was something about the instrument that I really loved. I just really took to it.”

And she has. Ivers continues to dazzle a broad range of crowds and critics alike. Although her music is founded on traditional Irish sounds, she constantly refines her shows to appeal to a wider base than just fiddle-lovers.

“It [the music] is certainly traditionally based, really steeped in Irish tradition,” said Ivers. “But I also love what a violin can do as an instrument, and I love taking it out there a little bit more than what it does traditionally.”

Ivers said she derives from what one might expect at a fiddle concert by broadening the scope of tempos, including a lot of vocals and emotion for layering, sharing the music’s background or historical significance with the audience, and continually revising arrangements and accompaniment.

In addition to her band Immigrant Soul, Ivers has guest starred with more than 40 symphony orchestras, the Boston Pops, Riverdance, Sting, The Chieftains and Patti Smith, to name just a few. She is a Grammy Award-winning musician and a nine time All-Ireland Fiddle champion.

When the Washington Post says, “she suggests the future of Celtic fiddle,” it’s no wonder that ZETA Music, the world’s leading electric stringed instrument maker, has recently introduced the Eileen Ivers Signature Series Violin.

Over the span of her musical career, Ivers said her music has evolved with her character.

“Learning a tradition you become immersed in all that it is and the history and the players who have played it and recorded it before you,” said Ivers. “But then you get older, you get out there, you listen to a lot of different kinds of music, and just life experiences come into your playing, and your personality, and that’s infused with how you play.”

Ivers and Immigrant Soul will perform at the Alberta Bair Theater this Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 and $30. Call the ABT box office for tickets and more information at 256-6052.
