Indie folk duo Jon and Roy: Homes
November 15th, 2010 9:32 pm PT

Let's play a little word association. I'll give you a phrase and you just blurt out (don't worry, no one is watching) the first thing that pops into your mind. Ready? Indie folk. Let me guess. You immediately thought of a duo in cardigan sweaters and skinny jeans, with unkempt bangs above black horn-rimmed glasses strumming guitars and singing harmonies.
OK, so what if I say "indie folk with a twist?" That is more or less what is promised in the bio of Jon and Roy. Not buying it? Well, Jon and Roy do perform songs that bring to mind Jack Johnson and Xavier Rudd. However, this band also brings in some African influence in the guitar of "Any Day Now" and some very Caribbean rhythms in "Cuban B" and "It's Gonna Be Fine." These are all songs that will get your head moving. Oh, and speaking of songs that will get your head moving, check out "Homemade Shirts." The combination of guitar, bass, and fiddle in this song is sure to get you bobbing your head.
So, that is at least part of the twist. The band also works in some reggae influence into "Oh it Seemed" and calls up some heavy CCR influence on"Giddy Up."(Yes, I'm serious. I dare you to listen to this song and not think about "Who'll Stop the Rain?")
Can I say this is a groundbreaking album? No. The band doesn't do anything revolutionary. Still, it is a well-crafted album with a lot of good songs on it. If you want the ideal setting for this one, try this on for size. On a cool, drizzly, or foggy day where you don't really want to go outside, pour yourself a hot beverage and put this album on.
