A more traditional "world" top 10
December 15th, 2010 by David Sommerstein
The Beat Authority often gets called a "world music" show, for good reason. My motto is "great grooves from all over the world".
But I play a lot of hip hop, soul, R&B, jazz, and even some roots and rock stuff, too. And I leave out some of the "slower" world stuff, even though it's lovely and wonderful. It just doesn't fit my show.
Spin the Globe out of KAOS in Olympia, WA has hit all the world music notes for years. It's a terrific show you can check out online. Here's their top 20 list for 2010, which includes gems like Tony Allen, Khaira Arby, and Luisa Maita.
One really caught my attention on it, because it would have made my top ten, had I not slept on it until the very end of the year. It's Red Baraat, self-described "brangin' Bhangra & Brass Funk". I mean, damn. And look at these guys. They deserve a top 10 spot.
Red Baraat is playing every Thursday night in January at Brooklyn's Barbes. And they're joining a tremendous lineup at this year's Globalfest on January 9th. If you like world msuci, get thee down to NYC for this incredible show – 12 bands, 3 stages, one great night!
