Aurelio Martinez Replaces Creole Choir of Cuba at globalFEST 2011

Friday January 7, 2011

The stage is set in New York City for one of the most important world music events of the year: the visionary globalFEST. Presenting thirteen artists/bands on two stages in one spectacular night of music, globalFEST will take place January 9 at Webster Hall.

Creole Choir of Cuba were on the original roster, but due to visa issues (what's new?), will be replaced by Garifuna musician Aurelio Martinez. Though CCoC will certainly be missed, Aurelio is no slouch -- I've seen him live and attendees are in for a phenomenal show. Other artists on the docket are Ballake Sissoko and Vincent Segal (watch the preview video from their soon-to-be-released CD on YouTube -- really stunning stuff); Novalima, one of the best live bands I've seen in years; Red Baraat, a "bhangra-funk" artist who I've not seen live but who my New York-based friends say wonderful things about; and Rhythms of Rajasthan, a Rajasthani music and dance collective who I've also not seen, though I've been blown away by some of the individual members' previous groups.

Going to globalFEST? Who are you most looking forward to seeing? Leave a comment and let us know! 01/07/11 >> go there
