Live From globalFEST: Jazz Musicians
by Patrick Jarenwattananon

The day after the much bandied-about Winter Jazzfest, the "world music" community had its own mini-marathon in New York, globalFEST. NPR Music has obtained recordings of this year's event, and there's even an All Songs Considered episode with highlights.

While all 13 sets are worth discovering, jazz fans may be particularly curious to see some jazz musicians in the mix here. The Afro-Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez won the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute Competition way back when; he now leads a band made tight by its residency at Guantanamera restaurant in Manhattan. Sunny Jain gets calls from jazz musicians as a kit drummer; he also plays the Punjabi double-sided drum called the dhol, especially when he lead the bhangra-meets-brass band Red Baraat. Both percussionists played globalFEST, which I'll take that as further proof that jazz training goes a long way in shaping competent musicians of any stripe. [NPR Music: globalFEST 2011]
