Japanese percussion group Kodo performs at Disney Concert Hall on 10 February

  • February 6th, 2011 2:06 pm PT
Sometimes you go to a music event because you know what you'll be getting. Other times, maybe you decide to go to an event because it has some "Wow!" factor, like the artist has been at it for a long time, or doesn't come to your area that frequently, or makes music unlike anything you have ever heard. Well, on Thursday night, you can catch a group that has all of the aforementioned "Wow!" factors.
Kodo is a Japanese percussion group that has been performing for 30 years. When you listen to the music of Kodo, it's hard to say what other group it sounds like, probably because it doesn't really sound like any other group. It contains koto, shamisen, kokyu, and lots of drums. And how is this for a "Wow!" factor? The group has a 900-pound drum. Just ask yourself how often you'll be able to see something like that. Now I could sit here and try to explain Kodo to you, but I think you'd be better off listening to a couple of the songs or checking out the video.
Kodo performs Thursday at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Tickets for this show range from $37 to $90. The doors open at 7:30. The show begins at 8.
