PICK OF THE DAY
You gotta have heart
In Japanese, the word “Kodo’’ has two meanings: One is heartbeat, the primal source of all rhythm; the other is children of the drum. The Kodo Drummers troupe of 17 men and 8 women present a 10-piece program including three new works. “Sakaki,’’ opens the program and features a male solo dance inspired by a Shinto ceremony. March 13 at 4 p.m. $47-$60. Symphony Hall, 301 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. 617-482-6661. www.celebrityseries.org

TODAY

You’ll like it
The National Baseball Hall of Fame Archive in Cooperstown, N.Y., accepted the new baseball album by Howie Newman. “Baseball’s Greatest Hits, Volume 2’’ is the title, and the comedic singer-songwriter is in Westford to play songs from this and his new CD, “Trust Me, You’ll Like It.’’ 8 p.m. $12, $5 teens, free for kids. Westford Museum, 2-4 Boston Road, Westford. 978-692-5550. www.westford.com/museum

Mommy dearest Mama Rose is a pushover compared to the mother in Handel’s “Agrippina.’’ This dark comedy is about a mother who plots to make her spoiled son, Nero, the Emperor of Rome. Sung in Italian with projected English translation. Tonight at 7:30 (through March 22; lecture 30 minutes before each performance). $34 and up. The Citi Performing Arts Center Shubert Theatre, 265 Tremont St., Boston. 866-348-9738. www.blo.org

A fine tribute For 53 years, Allen Lannom led the Masterworks Chorale, and tonight’s concert is a tribute to the late conductor. Former Globe music critic Richard Dyer gives the opening remarks before the performance of Dvorak’s Stabat Mater. Mezzo-soprano Victoria Avetisyan (pictured) is one of the performers. 8 p.m. $20-$42. Sanders Theatre, 45 Quincy St., Cambridge. 617-496-2222. www.masterworkschorale.org

TOMORROW
A jazz explorer
Brad Mehldau is an improviser but also relishes the formal architecture of music. The pianist’s new work, “Rock ’n’ Roll Dances,’’ was commissioned by Carnegie Hall. Brad Mehldau and Friends visit Cambridge tomorrow to play this piece and more, accompanied by pianist Kevin Hays and other musicians. March 12 at 8 p.m. $30-$42.
