PickPocket's world tour of sound: The Bay Area affords countless opportunities for adventurous musicians to collaborate with like-minded players. If you're into sounds being made halfway across the planet, there's a good chance that someone around here wants to play with you. Local outfit the pickPocket Ensemble has tapped into that worldly energy, finding inspiration around the globe to make a beautiful, exotic songs.

"The acoustic world-music scene in the Bay Area is fairly large but also pretty well connected, so that players who want to can find each other," pickPocket leader Rick Corrigan says. "There is so much variety in the music you can hear and study here, from Greek rembetika music of the '30s to klezmer and Balkan music, to North African and Middle Eastern musics." The band just released its latest album, Memory, which it recorded earlier this year at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. It's the first half of a two-part project. "It's a look over the shoulder at all the places we’ve been, with some older and newly reimagined pieces mixing in with new work," he says. "Part two will be us looking ahead — a celebration of what's to come, focusing on some of the high-energy, slinky rhythms and melodies that we're known for, and a chance to present some wonderful new pieces."

The Ensemble has started working with cellist Sam Bass — known for his work with Les Claypool and Loop!Station — and all six members will be at Le Bateau Ivre in Berkeley on Wednesday, Dec. 8."Our live performance is a big part of what's exciting us these days," Corrigan says. "The further we go, the more we want to bring the music back to what's elementalin it. These pieces stand up to many different interpretations, and lately we've been moving toward emphasizing the stark simplicity and rhythmic intensity of the melodies themselves." 12/06/10 >> go there
