The Pickpocket Ensemble Memory (thepickpocketensemble.com)
Instead of discussing the Balkanization of world music forms, San Francisco-based quintet The Pickpocket Ensemble would rather play Balkan Music. Or Greek music, French music, Arabic music. The band's intention was to surpass any specific labeling, common among internationally minded outfits. While the band's debut, Memory, is not going to break any boundaries, their border-crossing acoustic sound is quite beautiful and charming. Having grown disillusioned with electronic music, bandleader Rick Corrigan craved the intimacy of live instrumentation in small rooms. Brandishing an accordion, he started a weekly party at a Hungarian restaurant, adding players and styles over time. This eventual ten-song result touches upon a range of forms, though predominantly leaning towards the head swaying nods of musette tempered by sedate banjo, cello and piano flourishes. This heartfelt journey adds splendidly to the acoustic arsenal of artists who crave the warmth of quietude. 12/21/10 >> go there
