I had a chance to have a quick chat with multi-hyphenate Mem Nahadr on Friday.   Of course, much of the conversation centered on For Colored Girls (which, as of this writing I’ve yet to see) and the song she wrote for it.  Other things we talked about:

• Her relationship with Ntozake Shange
• How she approached the writing of the song
• What she and Ntozake both value about free jazz
• What Lars Von Trier’s got to do with it

As she mentioned, she and Ntozake will be performing together from today thru November 17 at Nuyorican Poets Cafe on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.  Check the Nuyorican site for performance days, times, and tickets.
