The melding of various “Western” styles of music with Africa continues with the duo of Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Segal — the former a Malian kora player with the griot tradition in his blood, the latter a classically trained French cellist who has turned his skills to pop, collaborating with everyone from Sting and Elvis Costello to Marc Ribot and Blackalicious. On their Chamber Music (Six Degrees, on sale Tuesday) the two blend the sound of bowed and plucked strings for a mellifluous, virtuosic effect that — at its best — creates its own world apart from its influences.
