Bill Bragin: Think Locally, Listen Globally
September 21, 2011 3:03 PM

One of the true standouts at this year’s annual globalFEST world music festival was the sublime cross-cultural duo Chamber Music, featuring Malian kora master Ballake Sissoko and French cello virtuoso Vincent Segal. The two musicians play with subtle and sensitive communication as Sissoko’s 21-stringed lute-harp and Segal’s extended cello technique intermingle to create a new hybrid music that encompasses the highest possibilities of world music “fusion.”

Their first full concert in New York on Sept. 27 will also inaugurate a new world music series at the intimate Elebash Concert Hall. Transcendent string music that shouldn’t be missed by lovers of either African or contemporary classical music.
