A Hawk and a Hacksaw with North America and Jenny Invert
Some years back, a handful of record labels began distributing traditional folk music from Eastern Europe, and people flocked to these sounds. This exposure paved the way for any number of throwback artists and bands to try their hands at the music. One such group is Albuquerque duo A Hawk and a Hacksaw. The project of accordionist Jeremy Barnes (formerly of Neutral Milk Hotel) and violinist Heather Trost, A Hawk and a Hacksaw forays deep into these folk styles. With upbeat rhythms and influences ranging from Balkan folk to klezmer and even traditional Greek-style music, Barnes and Trost have brought a worldly and exciting style into the lexicon of young music fans worldwide. Horns, strings, pipes and hypnotic beats play off the time-honored beauty of Eastern Europe for music that demands rapt attention. Though A Hawk and a Hacksaw hails from just 40 minutes south of here, Santa Fe appearances are rare and worth a look and listen. If you’ve found yourself enamored by contemporary bands such as Beirut or even its traditional roots, this is the show you’ve been waiting for.
