[AHAAH!] When Jeremy Barnes (formerly of Neutral Milk Hotel) traveled to Budapest, he ended up staying for two years. There, he and A Hawk and a Hacksaw co-founder Heather Trost absorbed the giddyap, brassy march rhythms of Eastern Europe. Fittingly, the band lent a significant hand to Beirut’s 2006 effort, Gulag Okestar, settling in New Mexico but holding steadfast to its highly developed Balkan roots. With a new record in Cervantine, AHAAH comes off as a Hungarian roots band covering Calexico, or vice versa. Either way, the band is teeming with musical folklore and has Old World charisma to spare.
