Another week begins as we inch closer and closer to spring. And because of the calendar, The State Room – which largely avoids booking many shows in the summer – is going full tilt throughout March.
They’re running three shows across three nights to start the week. While they also would seem to be somewhat intriguing, Tuesday might be the most interesting of the three gigs when the Portland Cello Project hits town.

Monday night features Blues Traveler’s harmonica monster in a relatively rare small-club setting with his new project, John Popper and the Duskray Troubadours. Although this is a new project and the band is touring behind its brand-new debut, any show featuring Popper is a guarantee to contain scorching harp playing and good vibes. Tickets are still on sale for this, which starts at 8 p.m.

Tuesday offers a wide range of options. Over at Club Sound – the smaller part of In The Venue – ’80s industrial rockers Lords of Acid will hold court. This is a triple-bill and starts at 6:30 p.m. Angelspit and Radical G open up. Tickets remain on sale for the all-ages show and start at $17.50.

Also The Urban Lounge features New Mexico indie-rockers A Hawk and A Hacksaw on Tuesday, which were last in SLC a few years back opening for Andrew Bird. Music starts a little after 10 p.m.

The Complex hosts Jamaican reggae with singer Barrington Levy. This sounds like a good chance to hear some live reggae from a guy who’s been around. Levy started making records in the ’70s. This may be a better option than you suspect.

As mentioned above, The Portland Cello Project featuring Laura Gibson is at TSR on Tuesday night. This group works to take classical sounds to different venues and covers a huge range of songs, including everything from R. Kelly to Led Zeppelin to Bach. This one seems too different to let slide by without checking into.

Wednesday night at the Urban Lounge offers a real treat when Seattle indie-folksters The Grand Hallway, return to Salt Lake City. This group was last in town during December 2009 and stunned a State Room crowd with their amazing harmonies and strong original songbook. Yes, a triple-bill at the Urban promises a late night for working stiffs, but if anyone’s worth it, it’s these guys. Ohio indie-rockers The Lighthouse and The Whaler will play second and the local duo of David Williams and Jay Henderson open.
