The Mix: All The Bands At All Tomorrow's Parties

by Otis Hart

September 26, 2011

This year's summer-festival circuit felt at times like a series of reruns. Many bands made a decent chunk of change hopping from one long weekend to the next (a process our Jacob Ganz higlighted back in April). There's nothing wrong with that, really, but it does illustrate how festival organizers are often willing to sacrifice an eclectic vision or identity to attract more paying customers.

Not so with the All Tomorrow's Parties festival series. Ever since ATP honchos Barry Hogan and Deborah Higgins started hosting weekenders in 2000, they've asked musicians to help curate the lineups, the result being one band's dream team of acts instead of an aggregation of trending buzz bands.

This year's North American ATP festival — which takes place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 in Asbury Park, N.J. — was designed in large part by the always eerie, always affecting Portishead. NPR Music will be at the festival, recording sets and tweeting the best things we see (follow @allsongs and @totalvibration for the latter). To get everyone in the mood, we put together a mix of songs from every artist (including comedians) scheduled to take the stage. Unfortunately, though, we had to remove Mogwai from the mix at the last second when the Scottish post-rock group canceled all of its North American gigs.

You can find the full schedule and set times at All Tomorrow's Parties' website. (Note: Mogwai has cancelled its Sunday performance.)

Artists included in the mix:

A Hawk and a Hacksaw • A Silver Mt. Zion • The Album Leaf • Anika • Awesome Tapes From Africa • Battles • Beak> • Bonnie "Prince" Billy (Will Oldham) • Hannibal Buress • Chavez • Cluster • Colin Stetson • Company Flow • Cults • DD/MM/YYYY • Deerhoof • Earth • Edan • Factory Floor • Foot Village • Hans-Joachim Roedelius • The Horrors • Jeff Mangum • Oneida • Peanut Butter Wolf • The Pop Group • Portishead • Public Enemy • Marc Ribot • Rory Scovel • Shellac • Silver Apples • Swans • Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 • Thought Forms • Ultramagnetic MC's • Reggie Watts
