SXSW for Beat Heads

SXSW in Austin, TX may be known for indie rock and emo hipsters, but the current electronic music revolution knows no bounds and even the “Live Music Capital of the World” cannot deny the power of the beat. As more and more kids grow up thinking of music in terms of bleeps and bloops instead of guitar wails and lyrics, you can expect this trend to continue.

SXSW is very much an “industry” festival, chock full of labels, agencies, press, tech heads, digital retailers and even some artists and fans. Centered around the Convention Center in downtown Austin, SXSW has three portions: interactive, film, and music, the latter of which takes place this year from Tuesday March 15 through Sunday March 20.

My taste in electronic music leans left towards the field and forward to the future, and you will see plenty of genres like dubstep, glitch hop, LA beat music, crunk, lovestep, frothstep, freakstep, UK Funky and experimental music highly represented in this list.

TUESDAY MARCH 15

Pitchfork @ SXSW Interactive Official Showcase
What: Pitchfork music publication is ALL over SXSW; this is the first of four showcases (some official, some not) and will feature the debut of “Pitchfork 3-D.” Held at one of Austin’s most beloved venues, this opening party has an indoor and outdoor stage and an interesting, avant-garde lineup.

What: Music service ONErpm hosts a globally-inspired showcase for those who like their beats with a little exotic flair. Zemaria brings bad ass electro rock from Brasil, Bituaya plays electro-Caribbean hip hop and Jumbo has the edgy rocker steaze from Mexico.
