Greet the holiday with Saw Doctors

If you want to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with one of Ireland's best bands, then head to the TLA in Philadelphia tonight.

The Saw Doctors are in town for the first time since the release of their latest album, "The Further Adventures of the Saw Doctors." The group, based in Galway, Ireland, features Leo Moran (vocals, guitar), Davy Carton (vocals, guitar), Kevin Duffy (keyboards), Anthony Thistlethwaite (bass guitar, saxphone) and Eémhén Craddock (drums).

"It's very satisfying to have the album done," Moran said during a phone interview. "It's brilliant to have it out. But it hasn't been released yet in America. You can only get it via mail order or on iTunes. And, of course, we're carrying it with us."

"We spent most of 2009 making the album and put a lot of work into it," he said. "We did most of the recording at Dave Edward's Rockfield Studio in Wales, working a week at a time. We finished it at Grouse Lodge in County Westmeath (Ireland). It's this fabulous studio out in the middle of nowhere."

The Saw Doctors have been together since 1986 and have gone through a number of personnel changes over the years. Moran and Carton are the only founding members remaining.

"Davy and I do most of the songwriting," Moran said. "Eémhén writes some as well. When we were done recording, we had six more songs than the 11 on the album. But it was very obvious to us the 11 we put on the album were the 11 to use.

"There was a lot of care put into the new album. We were very particular and even threw away some fully recorded tracks. I think it's our most consistent album ever."

Prior to the recording sessions, the Saw Doctors played every song from the new album in concert a least once.

"Now we can play all of them," Moran said. "But, because the album has not been released over here, we haven't found audiences to be familiar with the songs.

"For the live shows right now, we probably have about 10 older songs that are really hard to leave out - songs like 'Hay Wrap.' With the older songs, things develop all the time. Ever since we got a new drummer, they've tightened up a lot."
