April 10 | WAITIKI Festival at Russel House Tavern
by Scott Kearnan  |  April 04, 2011

Everyone can identify certain folks who've been deemed "fathers" of fields. Who's the father of psychoanalysis? Sigmund Freud. The godfather of soul? James Brown. But who's the "father of exotica"? No, not Hugh Hefner - that's erotica, you dirty bird. The answer is Martin Denny. Back in the 1950s and '60s, this composer and pianist popularized said style of lounge music, which invokes ersatz tropical rhythms to capture the spirit of the South Pacific. (Exotica is the musical equivalent of your wacky uncle who always wears Hawaiian shirts and renovated his basement to include a tiki bar: cheesy, but lovable.) Today would be Denny's 100th birthday, so the young culture vultures at Opus Affair have organized The WAITIKI Festival of Music & Cocktail. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Russell House Tavern (14 JFK Street, Cambridge, 617.500.3055), you'll chug tiki cocktails and boogie to music from the WAITIKI band and DJs Jack Fetterman, Gina of the Jungle, and Brother Cleve. There's no cover, but a $20 tax-deductible donation is suggested. 04/04/11 >> go there
