POP NOTES ELLIS WIDNER ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE
Azam Ali, From Night to the Edge of Day, Six Degrees
Motherhood and exile give birth to a silky, stirring set of songs from the gifted Azam Ali, the Iranian-born singer/songwriter. Fans of public radio’s Hearts of Space and artists such as Loreena McKennitt and Sheila Chandra will feel right at home with Ali’s luscious, heartfelt and exotic songs.
Ali, who has worked with Nine Inch Nails, Mickey Hart and King Crimson, presents Iranian, Turkish, Lebanese and Kurdish lullabies. While they have their soothing qualities, closer listening reveals that lurking under these lovely sounds is a profound yearning for home.
“Tenderness” began as a melody that came to Ali as she spent her first night at home with her newborn son. The dreamy tones, dronelike and lush, are a perfect setting for Ali’s vocalizing, which is imbued with love, sweetness and a bittersweet longing.
The booklet includes English translations of the lyrics in this most remarkable recording.
