Album of the Week: “Electric Moroccoland/ So Below,” Club d’Elf

Crushed between the borders of Morocco, jam band land and the kingdom of avant-garde jazz lies Club d'Elf.

Somerville bassist/sintir wizard Mike Rivard leads his offbeat band through two discs of deep, difficult North African rhythms and droning organic and electronic grooves.

Guests including John Medeski, DJ Logic, Duke Levine and members of Morphine add loads to this chaotic adventure, but it’s some less-familiar contributors who are killer: download Hassan Hakmoun singing a ripping version of “Sunshine of Your Love” or “So Below” for the James Brown-meets-Sun-Ra horns for a taste.
