If Jose Conde could talk it would say, What do you want me to be? It roams, it travels, it wanders across Brazil, across Jamaica, into South Africa—“Munghana Wamina” is “a collaboration with Friends from Makuleke Village South Africa”—it opens at a gallop and sidles into a hammock somewhere around track four or five—and the tone is always so civil, so willing, that through all of these travels it seems to be searching for the ideal thing you might like it to resemble. Are you putting a compilation together? Yes? Well do you need some reggae? A bit of tango? Are you making it for your mother? For a friend who loves animals? Would you prefer the mother song in English? The love song in Portuguese? He collaborates with the Tsonga and he would collaborate with you too if only he could reach you through the plastic. Maybe he can penetrate by stroking.
